Forget what you're used to seeing...

Production Journal: Day 3

Thursday, October 2nd

With the rom-com nature done, I got a proper haircut and readied myself to play the role I would be playing for the majority of the film… colorblind Oliver.  I don’t think colorblind Oliver laughs or ever gets much more than a little grin… but then again, he has little reason to.

Aging the characters 3 years wasn’t too difficult… Oliver dressed more like an artist than a college student… Blake dressed less like someone who was chiefly concerned with his appearance and more like a man that has to get up at 3 a.m. to care for his crying child when it’s his turn.

We switched the monitor to monochrome, and delved into the world of noir-styled lighting.  There wasn’t a lot of dialogue in this segment (as it all happens over 2 different phone calls), and it was shot at my house, which made setup and teardown quite easy.

The thing I learned is that we only had our 3-piece light kit at the time, and the most time consuming element of shooting action is lighting for each setup… which required some practice beyond our weeks of equipment tests before we started shooting.

Overall, it came up for some good, tense footage where Oliver is fearing that his past is coming to get him in a most literal sense (I’ll try to avoid as many spoilers as I can).

Fun note: We shot this sequence well before we knew we’d have Doug Jones play Jamison, and the phone conversation is the only real dialogue between the two characters… something I regret as an actor.
